World Water Day: Water Pressures
UNICEF estimates that 80 percent of the diseases in India are water related. Water-borne diseases are the leading cause of death for Indian children. India has 18% of the world’s population and 4% of the world’s fresh water. Despite its poverty and lack of resources, rural India is leading the way in collaborative water management. There, desert communities, corporations, health organizations, foundations, water experts, women’s self-help groups and villagers have partnered to develop local solutions to water problems. Water Pressures highlights this innovative Indian model of systematic collaboration and advocates that this model serve as a basis for much-needed global water management education.
