This Day in History: The Golden Gate Bridge
San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge began construction on January 5th 1933. The great bridge links the city with Marin County. When it opened in 1937 it replaced a ferry service that had been in operation for more than 100 years. When it was completed it was the longest suspension bridge span in the world and it became the symbol of the city it served.
